Not for the squimish...I'm serious.

At 6PM yesterday, Lucy began to have diarrhea. We started taking her out every 2 hours, then 1.5 hours. She wasn't eating either. Trev took her out before going to bed around 12-1am. At 2:00 we woke to a horrible smell. Lucy had had an accident all over half of the kitchen, but now it had blood in it. We decided to try Imodium, cleaned it up and tried to go back to bed, but both of us was too worried about her needing to go out. And she did about an hour later. Trev got her down quickly. Gave her another Imodium. She seemed to finally be feeling better, so we got some sleep. We got up at 8AM b/c Lucius was up. Walked into the kitchen to see she'd done it again. But now it was straight blood. At this point we're really worried.
We went to the vet at 10:30. This will be our 3rd dr. to see. He thinks it is more likely Giardia, which is a common bacteria picked up at dog parks or any shared dog community. At this point I'm ticked that we spent so much money and this dr. thinks it's just a common dog illness. But I'm also relieved. She's prescribed 5 medicines and we are about to leave when she has an accident. The vet was so kind and got someone to help me across the street and to the car while saying not to worry about the accident inside. This time was worse, b/c she was just dripping blood, and since her tail was tucked due to being at the vet...you get the nasty picture. We drove home and I prayed the whole way for her not to go again. And lucky me, she did survive that. But once out of the car it started again.
We went out back and I tied her to a tree and waited for it to stop. Maybe 20 minutes. Once upstairs I put her in our double shower enclosure. Prepared her meds and went to put her bowls in the shower with her. I figure this is my best solution. I brought Vega too. If Lucy sees Vega eat, it sometimes helps her to eat. But Vega had another idea and ate 2 of her pills. So now I'm furious at her. Chucking pills down Lucy's throat and just waiting. We have at least 12 more hours of this, if it works.
I called the vet to make sure I didn't need to make Vega vomit. Fortunately not, but she may sleep all day. However, the vet did mention that he was more concerned after seeing the diarrhea.
I keep checking on Lucy and she hasn't laid down yet :( Is it wrong that I want to board her? Back in Alabama we would have just put her in the backyard. I sure am missing that option right now. So now we wait and see.

  1. Oh no! I am SO sorry that you guys (and Lucy) are having to go through this. I don't blame you for wanting to board her. At least the vet would have the correct remedies at hand until it's cleared up. At home, you are sort of at a loss for what to do...and like you said...you don't have anywhere to put her for her accidents. So sorry. Keep me posted.
